As a child, growing up on the Llano Estacado, the strength of the horizon and the contrast between the blue sky and red earth always stirred something in me. I believe these initial realizations were the awakening of the artist within myself. As a landscape architect, I first used space as my media, creating gardens and plazas for people to experience. My art has now evolved into melding organic forms, textures and patterns into metal to share an experience. Nature and human emotion are my inspiration and my art is a exploration of how to interpret these ideas and present them to people.
When I think about my process and what drives the creation of my art the following points come to mind:
The contrast of a hard, rigid material like steel in a soft organic form.
The use of shadow to expand and add depth to a sculpture.
The poetry of an asymmetrical shape that has balance.
The use of minute details in an enlarged scale to expose the viewer to something important.
